Impact is a service, which enables children and young people in similar situations to come together in a safe environment, where staff understand their issues and concerns, where staff care about the individual and where young people can have fun, and feel positive about their situation, whilst developing their social and emotional capabilities.
This service can be delivered to children with a range of needs including:
- Looked After Children
- Edge of Care
- Domestic Abuse
- Mental Health & Wellbeing
- Young Carers
Description of services
Impact is flexible in its delivery with the following options:
- Term-time weekly after school sessions
- School holiday weekly sessions/days
- One off days
- Series of days across a period of time
Children are able to develop their communication, confidence, relationships and ability to manage their feelings through a range of activities undertaken in a group in which they feel safe and not stigmatised. They participate in sessions such as arts and crafts, physical activities, team games, educational games and music. The sessions are developed around the needs and interests of the group, and they are fully involved in how the programme develops.
Impact was delivered to Looked After Children in Southampton from November 2011 to October 2014. It was delivered through weekly after school sessions, and school holiday trips, events and workshops. During this period Impact supported 79 children aged 5-12, and 19 Looked After Children aged 15-18 who volunteered on the project. Our impact assessment of the project showed that 80% of children felt more confident, 88% had better social skills and 72% had improved their behaviour. Carers were also surveyed and 91% strongly agreed that participants had increased their social skills, 85% saw improved confidence and 50% saw improved behaviour. Over 80% of carers also reported that the project provided much needed respite care, and 69% strongly agreed that it had helped to maintain the placement.
